How to Properly Put Eye Drops: A Guide for Optimal Eye Health | Dr Chandni Kotak Eye Surgeon Mumbai Today, I am going to talk about something very basic, which is how to use eye drops. I have realized that most patients coming into the clinic do not know how to use eye drops, and I believe that 90% of us are using them the wrong way. In fact, I was also using them the wrong way before I became an ophthalmologist. This is something that most of us are unaware of. So, first and foremost, make sure that the drops you are using are fresh. If it is an open bottle, make sure it is not more than a month old because there is always a chance of contamination, which could lead to an infection. If you are using drops for a long-term condition, such as glaucoma, speak to your doctor about how to preserve the drops and how long an open bottle can be used. Some drops are temperature-dependent and need to be kept in the refrigerator. If you notice a colour change in the drop, discard the bottle immediately and do not use it, even if the one-month time period has not passed. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before using the drops. If someone else is putting the drops in for you, make sure they also wash their hands thoroughly. If soap and water are not available, use a sanitiser to clean your hands. When opening the bottle, do not touch the tip with your hand. Retract your lower lid and place the drop in the pocket that forms. Then press the area around your eye for a few seconds to ensure that the drop stays in your eye and is absorbed. Do not look up and put the drop directly into your eye as this can be traumatic and lead to injuries. This is a very basic but important aspect of using eye drops. By following these steps, you can use eye drops safely and effectively.

What is Glaucoma Glaucoma is a disease of the eye in which the pressure within the eye rises which causes a gradual compression of the optic nerves causing an irreversible loss of vision. What is CATARACT A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of eye, which affects vision. It can occur in one or both eyes. Most Cataracts are age-related and people after the age of 50 years should get their eyes checked by an ophthalmologist. ABOUT CATARACT In our eyes, we have a natural lens that acts as a camera. The lens bends light rays that enter the eye in a manner that the rays fall on the retina and help us see clearly. However, as age Progresses, the lens loses its transparency and starts to get cloudy, which leads the vision to deteriorate, and it is like looking through a foggy or dusty car windshield making things look blurry, hazy or less colourful. Importance of regular eye check-up in Cataract Most people see with both eyes, so in a patient with cataract only in one eye or one eye operated, may not realize till the cataract is very advanced in the other eyes; thus lies the importance of regular eye checkup Treatment Surgery is the only treatment for cataract. Surgery is the only treatment for cataracts. Medicine, Eye Drops will not help. Nowadays, we can operate in the early stages if a patient’s lifestyle is hampered. With advancements in surgical techniques and new lenses, we get excellent results in all stages of cataracts, even the early cataractous stage. The procedure is a very simple one, virtually painless and fairly complication-free. It’s a fifteen minutes procedure and your in and out time of the hospital is 2-3 hours. The lens is removed using ultrasound energy and a new artificial lens is placed. This is called phacoemulsification (commonly referred to as laser surgery )

Your doctor may recommend using artificial tears, cleaning your eyelids with a wet cloth, and applying cold or warm compresses several times daily. If you wear contact lenses, you'll be advised to stop wearing them until treatment is complete. This year’s infection has been more virulent with most major government and private hospitals witnessing 15-20 cases daily, which is three-fold higher than average.<br />What is #conjunctivitis?<br />Conjunctivitis is an inflammation or swelling of the conjunctiva (the membrane that covers the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelid). when the membrane is irritated, it swells and the blood vessels dilate. the eye then becomes red. this is why “conjunctivitis” is sometimes called “#redeye” or “#pinkeye”. it can occur in either one or both eyes.<br />We at Naavya Eye care are seeing an increase in the number of patients having conjunctivitis in the last 3 weeks.
